Itinerary
Day 1 – ARRIVAL IN MADRID
Upon arrival in the capital of Spain pick up the car at the rental office and drive to the hotel. Time to relax and to refresh up. Overnight.
Day 2 – MADRID – City tour
Madrid is the capital of Spain and the political and financial centre. Drive through the streets, squares and most important avenues, seeing at the same time from the outside different monuments such as the Recoletos Promenade, Plaza Colon, the Cibeles Square, the Cortes or Parliament, the Paseo del Prado (where the Prado Museum is located), the Gran Via, the Plaza de España and the Plaza de Oriente where the Royal Palace and its gardens are located. Then you stroll through the “Old Madrid”, the Habsburg Quarter, walking along the Main Street and seeing the City Hall Square, the Main Square and some old back streets.
Please don’t forget to visit some of the important museums of the city like the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, Museum National Centre of Art Queen Sofia, the Prado Museum and some of the other places or monuments in Madrid. Overnight.
Day 3 – MADRID – TOLEDO – CORDOBA – 500 Km
Toledo was one of the first World Heritage Cities in Spain. In Medieval times, it was the meeting point of four different cultures and the former capital of Spain. We must remark the gothic Cathedral, a couple of old synagogues and some other relevant monuments. The visit in Toledo is not completed if you don’t visit a shop where are engraving gold in other metals.
Continue to Cordoba. Overnight.
Day 4 – CORDOBA – City tour – GRANADA – 200 Km
Cordoba’s highlight is the Mosque – Cathedral, monument designated a World Heritage Site; besides we must remark the Old Jewish Quarter with its Synagogue built during the medieval times. It is worthy to visit the Palacio de Viana with its patios and gardens, Corredera and Potro Squares, the Alcazar of the Christian Kings, the Roman Bridge and the Calahorra Tower.
You head to Granada. Overnight.
Day 5 – GRANADA City tour – SEVILLE – 300 Km
The Palace of the Alhambra and the Gardens of the Generalife are the highlights of Granada that were designated World Heritage Sites; to stroll in the Old Quarter is like going back to medieval times, having the chance to admire the Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, the Carthusian Monastery and some other monuments.
Depart to Seville. Overnight.
Day 6 – SEVILLE – City tour
Seville is the most emblematic city of Andalusia. Please visit the Park of Maria Luisa and its Spain Square, then leave to the old district of the city and stroll through the Santa Cruz Quarter; The Cathedral and the Alcazar or Fortress were designated World Heritage Sites; walk up to the Guadalquivir River see the Golden Tour and the Maestranza bullring, which probably is the most renamed in Spain.
A stay in Andalusia is not complete if you don’t attend to a Flamenco Show. Overnight.
Day 7 – SEVILLE – EVORA – LISBON – 470 Km
From Seville, you head towards the Portuguese border, crossing a bridge over the Guadiana River; enter in Portugal driving from south to Evora, which is in the centre of the country. Some monuments of this city were designated World Heritage Sites; nowadays still retains from its historical past, the Roman temple to Diana, the Moorish Arches, a 16th century University and some medieval Gothic and Renaissance style palaces and churches such as the Cathedral of St. Maria, the Convent of St. John the Evangelist, nowadays converted into Pousada dos Loios, the Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval, St. Francis church, and the Palace of Dom Manuel, being considered Portugal’s foremost showpiece of medieval architecture.
From there you head to Lisbon. Overnight.
Day 8 – LISBON – City tour
You will visit the main streets, avenues, squares and monuments. The heart of the modern city is the Plaza Marques of Pombal and the most important street is the Avenida da Liberdade. In the lower part of the city, next to the River Tagus you will see the Plaza del Comercio where the Royal Palace is, Rossio being the popular square of the low area and Plaza dos Restauradores. Visit also the medieval quarter Alfama.
The quarter of Belem situated on the west of the city is an area built in the Manuelino style where one can find the Monastery of the Jerome’s. In this same quarter, you will see the Tower of Belem from outside, the Monument to The Discoverers. It is worthy to visit the Museum of Carriages, the Calouste Gulbenkian, the Centre of Modern Art and the Marina Museum. Overnight.
Day 9 – LISBON – MERIDA – MADRID – 650 Km
You leave towards Spain crossing Portugal from west to east arriving later in Merida. The splendorous history of Merida can be observed in the monumental and archaeological ensemble that it keeps, one of the best preserved in Spain. Thus, the Roman legacy is still present in almost every little corner of town, the Roman Theatre being one of the most emblematic constructions. Next to it the Roman Amphitheatre is located; both monuments were designated World Heritage Sites.
Continue to Madrid. Overnight.
Day 10 – MADRID DEPARTURE
You leave to the airport to drop off the car at the rental office, then you do all the formalities to board the plane to your next destination.
